Military Doctrine

Military doctrine - Military doctrine is a level of military planning between national strategy and unit-level tactics, techniques, and procedures. It provides a shared way of thinking about military problems, but does not direct how military problems will be solved.

Rumsfeld doctrine - The Rumsfeld Doctrine (named after its originator Donald Rumsfeld) is primarily concerned with the transformation of the United States Military. It would be considered Rumsfeld's own take on RMA (Revolution in Military Affairs).

Civilian control of the military - Civilian control of the military is a doctrine in civil-military relations and military and political science that places ultimate responsibility for a country's strategic decision-making in the hands of the civilian political leadership, rather than professional military officers. One author, paraphrasing Samuel P.

Military operations other than war - Military operations other than war (MOOTW) is a concept in United States military doctrine that refers to the use of military capabilities across a range of operations that fall short of outright war. Military operations other than war focus on deterring war, resolving conflict, promoting peace, and supporting civil authorities in response to domestic crises.

Studies in British Military Thought: Debates with Fuller and Liddell Hart by Brian Holden Reid,
John Frederick Charles Fuller (1878-1966), British soldier, military analyst, military doctrine and war historian, is considered the father of modern armored (tank) warfare -- first as planner of the attack at Cambrai in November 1917, military doctrine and then as author of a number of works that challenged traditional British military thought. His ideas were resisted in his own country but had a major impact on German military doctrine and Soviet military doctrine. Sir Basil Liddell Hart (1895-1970) was also a British military historian military doctrine and analyst of note military doctrine and authored influential military histories covering figures from Scipio Africanus to Field Marshal Rommel. In the twelve analytical essays in Studies in British Military Thought Brian Holden Reid examines these two figures whose ideas have influenced the interpretation of events in military history from antiquity to the Cold War. He compares military doctrine and contrasts their views on tactics, operational art military doctrine and strategy, military doctrine and war as a social phenomenon. Additionally, he discusses the radically different temperaments of the two military doctrine and shows how their differences shaped their work in important ways: In so doing, he continues to bring their ideas to students military doctrine and practitioners of modern warfare military doctrine and raises fundamental issues concerning the nature of war.

Blitzkrieg to Desert Storm: The Evolution of Operational Warfare

Blitzkrieg to Desert Storm: The Evolution of Operational Warfare
When Germany launched its blitzkrieg invasion of Prance in 1940, it forever changed the way the world waged war. Although the Wehrmacht ultimately succumbed to superior Allied firepower in a two-front war, its stunning operational achievement left a lasting impression on military commanders throughout the world, even if their own operations were rarely executed as effectively. Robert Citino analyzes military campaigns from the second half of the twentieth century to further demonstrate the difficulty of achieving decisive results at the operational level. Offering detailed operational analyses of actual campaigns, Citino describes how UN forces in Korea enjoyed technological military doctrine and air superiority but found the enemy unbeatable; provides analyses of Israeli operational victories in successive wars until the Arab states finally grasped the realities of operational-level warfare in 1973; military doctrine and tells how the Vietnam debacle continued to shape U.S. doctrine in surprising ways. Looking beyond major-power conflicts, he also reveals the lessons of India's blitzkrieg-like drive into Pakistan in 1971 military doctrine and of the senseless bloodletting of the Iran-Iraq War. Citino especially considers the evolution of U.S. doctrine military doctrine and assesses the success of Desert Storm in dismantling an entrenched defending force with virtually no friendly casualties. He also provides one of the first scholarly analyses of Operation Iraqi Freedom, showing that its plan was curiously divorced from the realities of military history, grounded instead on nebulous theories about expected enemy behavior. Throughout Citino points to the importance of mobility--especially mobilized armor--in modern operational warfare military doctrine and assesses therespective roles of firepower, training, doctrine, military doctrine and command military doctrine and control mechanisms.
